Obituary For Annie Lee Hix - Johnson
Annie Lee Hix-Johnson illuminated the world on April 3, 1938, when she was
born in Appomattox County, Virginia to Jessie Hix and Anna Gilliam Hix. She
transitioned to her heavenly home on November 12, 2023. Annie attended the
Appomattox Public School System, until she left to seek employment, and join her
siblings to support the family unit. She did not stop educating herself and keeping an
open mind as the world evolved. Annie felt it was important to express your thoughts
and opinions but always in a respectful manner. Annie was married to Curtis Leon
Johnson and they were blessed with two wonderful daughters, Thelma Marie Johnson
and Margaret Johnson.
At a tender age, she ventured to New York with her sister Ollie, as she yearned
to enhance her lifestyle, quality of life, and solidify her independence. Upon her arrival
she briefly accepted employment doing live-in assignments. Annie was loved by her
clients because she was kind and compassionate and treated each client with dignity and
respect. Annie felt it was always important to treat others in the manner you wished to
be treated. When she felt it was time to spread her wings, she ventured out and accepted
a new challenge in familiar territory. Annie was a fashionista and her appearance played
an important role in her daily attitude. As a result, this lead her to employment as a
seamstress with Kensington Knitwear, which specialized in imported suits. Annie had a
passion for fashion and a keen eye for quality clothing. Although she loved to shop and
look like a million bucks, Annie loved a good sale. Along with her sisters, Ollie and Betty,
they enjoyed bonding at department stores such as Gimbels, Macy’s, Lord and Taylor’s
and Nordstrom’s. Following a thirty plus career at Kensington Knitwear, Annie retired
and yearned for a new career. She decided she wanted to obtain her CNA (Certified
Nursing Assistant) credentials, and pursued it with dedication and determination, to
achieve her goal. She faithfully attended her classes, completed her assignments and
successfully passed her exams. She was assisted by her daughters with her study routines,
mock exams, and memorization, as they were extremely proud of her. After all, Annie
served as a role model and never believed in giving up. Upon receiving her New Jersey
State certification, she began to work at The New Jersey Department of Military and
Veteran’s Affairs where she remained for twelve dedicated years before retiring. Annie
was truly adored by her colleagues, patients and their families and administrative staff.
She was honored several times for her outstanding professional performance and for
going above and beyond. Annie’s warm smile, soft spoken voice, laughter, huge heart
and dedication, meant the world to her colleagues and those who benefited from her
efforts. During this same time, Annie maintained employment at Shea Stadium/Citifield
(NY Mets), where she continued to extend her special blend of “Awesomeness”. Annie’s
graceful style made it easy for her to connect with anyone who crossed her path. After
over twenty nine years of service she retired and decided to enjoy the fruit of her labor.
While in New York she was a faithful and active member of Grace Baptist Church.
After she relocated to Virginia, she reconnected with Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
Her faith remained rooted in GOD. She was always grateful for her blessings and never
complained. Annie cherished spending time with family and friends, cooking delicious
meals, traveling when she could, shopping with a purpose and fun entertainment. She
encouraged people along life’s journey and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Annie will always be remembered as a Phenomenal Woman who brightened each day
and made the world a better place.
In addition to her parents, Annie was preceded in death by: her husband, Curtis
Leon Johnson; one daughter, Thelma Marie Johnson- Jones; her siblings, Ollie Mae Hix-
Patterson, Betty Watson, Rosa Davis, Gertrude Buckry, Robert Hix, Jessie Hix, Jr., James
Gilliam and Luther Hix.
Annie leaves to cherish her precious memory: her daughter, Margaret Johnson (
NY); a sister, Jenny Bell Chambers( ( VA); nieces, more like daughters, Marion Elaine
Watson, Dr. Aretha Thurman (VA), Genessa Hix- Jackson(VA) and Shaina Jackson
(VA); nephews, more like sons, Bobby Chambers(VA), David Watson (NC) and Paul
Thurman (VA); and a host of other beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family
members, church family, and colleagues.

Auntie you're in a Greater place now. Thank you for opening up your home for me to visit with you in June of 2023. You had cook fish before I arrived, that seasoning was on point. The next day enjoyed eating ice cream cone at carvel laughing and talking. Then we continued on with our day shopping at Sam's Club. We ate hamburgers for dinner, and then both of us went upstairs and got ready for bed. Boy was we tired. We had a lovely day, and I will cherish this memory forever. I love you dearly and Auntie I'm going to miss your soft smile you always greeted me with. Rest now in Gods bosom. 🙏🏽 🕊️ 🙏🏽🕊️
