Obituary For Charles Henry Pryor Sr.

On March 5th, 1949, Charles Henry Pryor, Sr affectionately, known as Charles Henry was born to Flossie Legin Pryor and Henry Pryor. The youngest of five children, with Burden, Arlene, Roy, and Aldrena, Charles enjoyed a fun childhood in Prospect, VA. There is not a corner or place in Prospect where he does not have a fond memory with a cousin or childhood friend. On Thursday, November 17th, Charles quietly and peacefully departed this life leaving to cherish his memory a wealth of family and friends. A Son of his Town Charles started his education in the public schools of Prospect, VA where during an unprecedented act of disobedience, all public schools were shut down in Prince Edward County due to desegregation. Ever creative, the family used one address in a neighboring town to get him into school (his first act of resistance). Once the officials caught wind that many students were using the same address the family was forced to move to Baltimore, MD so that Charles and his siblings could continue their education. When schools finally reopened in 1964, Charles was able to return to Prospect. This was the first time of many that Charles would leave but return home. A Young Man to Bring Change In 1964, learning the meaning of Separate but Equal, Charles became active in the Civil Rights Movement with numerous demonstrations, marches, and sit ins; he was even arrested for protesting before his graduation from Robert R. Moton High School in 1969. Charles loved to share his experiences with many young people and often reflected on the changes he helped make in his hometown. A Man to Serve Charles was drafted into the United States Army. Serving his Country and obtaining the rank of E4 Specialist before receiving an honorable discharge in March 1971. While his formal service was over, this was not the end of him serving his beloved community, church, and family.
