Obituary For Elsie Eanes Goodman
Elsie Mae Eanes was born in Amelia County, Virginia to John Jasper Eanes and Bettie Florine Johnson Eanes on April 12, 1944. She was the fourth of six children born to this union. She moved from Ameila to Prince Edward County, VA, with her family in 1958, at the age of fourteen. She attended Robert R. Moton High School from the 9th grade until a couple of years later, when she moved to Kittrell, North Carolina, where she graduated from high school due to Prince Edward County Public Schools closing instead of integrating. At an early age Elsie was baptized and joined High Bridge Baptist Church. Elsie decided that she wanted to relocate from North Carolina to 214 Wainwright Street Newark, New Jersey, where she landed a job working at this bar called the Big Clipper and she loved it. She also worked at Staten Island Disability Developmental Service Office, formerly known as Willowbrook State School, as Supervisor until her retirement. She was very active with the mentally and physically disabled. On April 16, 1990, she met and married Ernest L. Goodman from Essex County, Newark New. Jersey. Later, they resided in Tyler, Texas. Elsie had two sons, Derreck Eanes, and Darryl Eanes, Sr. whom she loved dearly. Elsie loved shopping, watching old western movies, traveling, listening to Marvin Gay, Johnnie Taylor, and My Last Two Dollars. She loved to cut up, eating out at different restaurants and enjoying her favorite, seafood. She is preceded in death by: her parents; her sons, Derrick, and Darryl Eanes, Sr.; her husband, Ernest; grandson, Darryl Eanes, Jr.; brother, William Matthew Eanes; two sisters, Macy Eanes Jones (Willie) and Hazel Eanes Ross (Raymond); two nieces; two nephews; one great nephew; other family members. She leaves to cherish fond memories: two sisters, Deaconess Charlene Eanes Palmer of Rice, Virginia and Bettie Jean Eanes Jeter of Amelia, Virginia; daughter-in-law, Myra Smalls Eanes of Baltimore, Maryland; four grandchildren, Allan, Jasmine, Troy and Stewart; 16 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, one devoted Deneen Miller Anderson; nephews, one devoted, Raymond “Scooby” Ross, Jr.; great nieces, one devoted, Missy; great nephews; a host of other relatives and friends, one devoted, Ms. Urscille Dove.
