Obituary For Flossie Mae Jennings Stokes
On April 21, 2025 Flossie "Big Momma" Stokes departed her life peacefully at The Woodlands Rehabilitation Center in Farmville, Virginia. She was 93 years old. Flossie was born October 20, 1931 in South Boston, Virginia, to the late Bill Womack and Hester Jennings.
Flossie was educated in the South Boston School System, At the age of 14, she moved to Farmville, Virginia to live with her sister after the passing of her mother. In 1950, she came into paths with the late Frank Stokes, Jr. where a marriage was kindled for 55 years.
Flossie was employed at Cedar Brook Restaurant, UniRoyal, Craddock-Terry, and Davis Pontiac in Farmville Virginia. A member of over 50 years to The Daughters of Elks Lodge #269, you could see Flossie doing one of her favorite things, Cooking. In her spare time, she loved to sew and nibble on little noses while she babysat. She enjoyed watching Family Feud and Lifetime, and while we couldn't stop her from doing it, she loved mowing the lawn. After going back and forth between churches, Flossie finally found a home at New Bethel Baptist Church, with her husband, in Meherrin, Virginia. Before her health declined, you could see her on Sundays in the choir singing and smiling. As a sibling to 15, she was one energetic and spiritual person, but never took any nonsense. Her infectious smile, hugs and kisses will be missed.
She was proceeded in death by: son, Horace "Peewee" Stokes; daughter, Fay "LitBit" Vaughan; grandson, James Haskins, Jr.; great-granddaughter, KaTara Dupuy; brothers, Tom, Wesley, Earl (her twin), Willie, George, Mack, and Henry; sisters, Minnie, Pauline, Bessie. and three others.
Flossie memories will live on through: daughter, Flossie "Diane" (William) Brown, of Cumberland, Virginia; son, Frank "Bubba" (Linda) Stokes III, of North Carolina; daughter, Hattie "Chris" Stokes of Farmville, Virginia; grandchildren, Tina Haskins, William (Jermetra) Brown, Frank (Amesia) Stokes IV, Travis Watson, Shauna (Michael) Dupuy, and Latoya Stokes; 21 great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; her living siblings, Rachel Taylor, of South Boston, Virginia and Resse Royster of Richmond, Virginia; two devoted close cousins, Shaun Stokes-Bolden and Ethel Green; and a host of other family and friends.
