Born in Cumberland, Virginia on July 26, 1940 to the late John McKinley and Virginia Booker Smith, Gladys was the third of nine children. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Dorothy Jones, William Smith, Carol Jackson, Valerie Motley and Jerry Smith.
