On Thursday, July 29, 2021 Hilda Banks, age 94, was called home to be with the Lord. She was born the fourth child of Earnest and Ruby Flood on September 6, 1926. She grew up and attended Buckingham County schools and worked on the farm. She then went to New York City for work and was employed at various factories. She married Benjamin “Benny” Banks November 27, 1947 and that union lasted 71 years, until his death in 2018. In 1957, she had the opportunity to spend four years in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba while Benny was stationed there. Upon her return to the states, she again went to NYC for work. This time she joined the NYC Department of Health, Bureau of Handicapped Children. In 1986, she retired and returned to Buckingham County, Virginia. She attended First Liberty Baptist Church and worked with the food bank and clothes closet, helping the community. She attended Bible study, was a lifetime member of the NAACP and Fleet Reserve Auxillary. Hilda had a passion for gardening and raised vegetables and flowers. She also enjoyed cooking, shopping, music and movies. Everyone knew she loved shopping and wearing the latest styles. Her clothes took up three closets! She had a smile, quick wit, humor and a compassionate spirit.
