Irvin Rufus Forbes Sr. was born December 19, 1936 to the late Charlie and Mildred Forbes in Dillwyn, Virginia. Irvin was the eleventh of thirteen children. He attended Buckingham County Public Schools. Irvin joined the U.S. Navy in 1954 where he served three years and had an Honorable Discharge.
