Isaac McKinley Ross Sr.
September 25, 1944 - October 03, 2025
Obituary For Isaac McKinley Ross Sr.
saac McKinley Ross Sr., age 81 of Prospect, Virginia, entered eternal rest on October 3, 2025, at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. Isaac was born in Cumberland, Virginia to Edward and Mary Frances Ross, he was one of their thirteen children.
Isaac attended school at Mary E. Branch until he was affected by segregation/public school closings in Prince Edward County. Once he could no longer attend school, Isaac began working. Later in his twenties, Isaac was the lead drummer in a band he and his brothers created called “The Ross Band”, where he then met his devoted wife, the former Odirisa Theresa Booker, of Farmville, Virginia.
The couple then moved to Richmond, Virginia, where they had their first child; their son, the late Isaac McKinley Ross Jr. A year or so later, the couple relocated to Paterson, New Jersey where they later had their daughter, Odirisa Shenise Ross. During this time, Isaac began driving trucks with numerous companies, with him naming one of his favorite trucks, a Peterbilt, “Yellow Dog”. While driving trucks, he traveled across the world, hauling goods from antique cars to furniture.
Isaac and his wife continued their life and marriage in New Jersey until moving to Virginia in 2003. Upon returning to Richmond, Isaac began working for Wal-Mart until he transferred to the Farmville location to be closer to family, where he then moved in with his daughter. Isaac worked at the Farmville location for a few years until his health declined and he was diagnosed with diabetes. He fully retired from Wal-Mart in 2020. His health also started to decline more after the unexpected loss of his middle grandchild, Iyonna Mingo, at the age of 19. Isaac continued to be in the care and household of his daughter, who became his primary caretaker.
Isaac did well for years, maintaining his health at his age, until September 2025, when he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Originally deciding to forego treatment, Isaac decided to receive chemotherapy, in hopes of being with his family longer.
The week before his passing, Isaac seemed to be responding well to the treatment, but unfortunately, on his 81st birthday, Isaac fell and broke his hip resulting in major surgery on his femur bone. Isaac recovered well from surgery and through the pain, remained positive and well spirited, joking and laughing with his family. Within a week of being hospitalized, the Lord saw fit to call him home to his reward. The family is thankful and will forever be grateful for the many memories we have of him and the love that he continuously showed.
Isaac was a devoted family man, who loved his family dearly and made sure to always shower them with his love. Isaac is predeceased by his mother and father; Eddie and Mary Ross, eight brothers; Robert Ross, George Ross, James Ross, Jacob Ross, Joseph Ross, Abraham Ross Sr., David Ross and Lorenza Ross, three sisters; Sarah Payne, Frances Ross, Elmira Boisseau, his only son; Isaac McKinley Ross Jr. and one granddaughter Iyonna Mingo.
Isaac leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Odirisa Theresa Ross, of Farmville; his only daughter, Shenise Ross of Prospect; two grandchildren and one grandson in law, Devenasia (JW) Jones and Lamonie Chambers, all of Prospect; one great grand girl (as he would call her), Saniy’ Nash, of Prospect and another unborn great grand girl; Jayouraa Jones; two devoted friends, James Mitchell and Jeff Warren; and a hosts of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
