In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 16, 2026, Deacon Jesse Isaiah Davis, Sr., slipped away peacefully to his heavenly home.

The Early Years

Deacon Davis was born on October 26, 1940 to the late Isaiah and Nannie Brown Davis in Buckingham, VA. He was raised by his late grandparents, along with his very special first cousins Pauline and John Davis. He was the youngest of three children and was preceded in death by his sister Mary Virginia Davis, Pauline and John. He had a strong kindred bond with his cousin Clarence (Booty) Davis, who also preceded him in death.

Faith and Education

Deacon Davis was baptized at an early age at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Dillwyn, VA and served as a Sunday school teacher. He later moved his membership to the Fork Union Baptist Church in Buckingham, VA to be on one accord with his wife. Deacon Davis was educated in the Buckingham County School System. He was a gifted artist who loved sports and excelled in both basketball and baseball. He graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School in 1959. After graduation, Deacon Davis enlisted in the United States Army where he served until 1962.

Life’s Journey

Upon returning to Buckingham he married the love of his life, Louise Chambers Davis on June 28, 1964. This union was blessed with one son, Jesse Isaiah Davis, Jr. In pursuit of a better life and opportunities, Deacon Davis relocated his family to Cleveland, Ohio. While in Cleveland, he was a successful entrepreneur owning a Shell Gas Station and an automobile mechanic shop.

After fifteen prosperous years of residing in Cleveland, Jesse relocated his family back to Buckingham in 1980 to be closer to his mother and other family members. Deacon Davis had a lifelong dream of opening his own auto repair shop from the ground up which he did in Buckingham, VA. During this time, he also was employed by the Virginia Department of Corrections and retired with more than 18 years of dedicated state service. He continued doing what he loved best, repairing cars and making his customers happy until his health slowed him down. His motto was “keep them happy so they will come back.”

Dedication to the Community

Deacon Davis was an active member of the American Legion Post #0134. He also served the Buckingham Vocational school by offering young men the opportunity to learn and experience how it would be to actually work in an auto mechanic shop. As a result of his dedication to the program, one of his star students, Omar Ayers currently operates Jesse’s former repair shop in Buckingham.

Joys of Life

Deacon Davis was an avid sports fan. He not only liked all the major sports, but while in Cleveland he was introduced to horse racing and attended the Kentucky Derby for many years. Jesse loved performing card tricks, telling jokes and looked forward to fellowshipping and playing cards weekly with his friends.

Faith and Commitment

On February 27, 2016, Jesse was ordained a Deacon at Fork Union Baptist Church with his wife and family by his side. He worked diligently with the Usher Board and was a stickler for neatness, uniformity and respect for the house of worship. He was dedicated to completing whatever task was required in keeping the worship temple presentable.

Legacy of A Life Well Lived

Deacon Davis leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of sixty-two years, Louise Chambers Davis; one son, Jesse Jr. (Deborah) of North Chesterfield, VA; one sister, Lillie Ann Gibson of Shaker Heights, OH; one brother-in-law, Donald Gibson (Evonne) of Roaming Shores, OH; one adopted granddaughter, Kimberly Glover Williams (Quandell), of Farmville, VA; a close family friend, Tim Braxton of Dillwyn, VA; and a host of cousins, other relatives and close friends.

Deacon Davis had an infectious smile and presence about him that everyone who met him loved. He was known by many nicknames to include “Papa”, “Six-fingers”, and “JD”. We all loved him, but God loved him best.
