Obituary For Josephine Hamilton Harris
Obituary Josephine Elizabeth Hamilton Harris was born to the late Henry Smith, Sr., and Hannah Johnson Smith on January 16, 1932, in Charlotte County, Virginia. She entered eternity on January 12, 2023 from MCV-VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA. She was raised in Cullen, attended Taro Elementary School, and graduated from Central High School in 1948. She married Herman O. Hamilton, Jr. in 1952, and they were blessed with four children. After his death, she married Floyd Thomas Harris in 1984, who also preceded her in death. Josephine accepted Christ at an early age and joined St. Andrews Baptist Church where she remained a faithful servant until death. She loved and supported her church by attending worship service, Sunday School, and the Fifth Sunday School Union. She served as a deaconess, past president of the Pastor’s Aid Society, and served as food coordinator for Vacation Bible School for many years. For a period of time, she served as President of VFW Post #2584, Darlington Heights, VA. As a youth, she sang in the Junior choir. She also attended and supported Triumph Baptist Church, Darlington Heights, Virginia. She accepted as her Christian duty to aid the sick and shut-in with visits and any assistance she could offer. She was employed at Roses Department Store for several years and later at Stackpole Component Company for 15 years. Her dream was to become a nurse, but she made the decision to stay home and raise her children instead. She was a loving and devoted mother. She adored her grandchildren and made them feel special whenever they were with her. Josephine loved visiting friends, took pleasure in helping others, talking to friends and family on the phone, writing letters, word puzzles, fishing, nature, flower gardening, listening to hymns, and loved quartet singing. She was a great cook, and loved to bake. Josephine was also preceded in death by: her parents; and siblings, Henry Smith, Jr., Elsie Goldman, Fred Smith, Rosa Harris, and James Smith. She leaves to cherish her memory: four loving and devoted children, Juanita Mason (John), Chesterfield, Va., William Earl Hamilton, Prospect, Va., Leatrice Patterson, Midlothian, Va., and James Hamilton, Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren, Jocelyn Hamilton, Virginia Beach, Va., Kellie Mason, Chesterfield, Va., and William Oscar Hamilton, Rice, Va.; sister-in-law, Martha Holcomb Smith, Baltimore, MD; and brother-in-law, Henry Haskins, Cullen, Va.; and many caring nieces, nephews, and friends.
