Laura O’Connor Jones was born January 2, 1927 in Appomattox County, Virginia, to William Anthony Jones and Althea Della Scott Jones. She departed this earthly life peacefully on January 7, 2022 at Centra-Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, VA. Laura was nicknamed “Polly” as a child and it remained with her amongst family for the rest of her life. Her sister Clara affectionately referred to her as “Poll”. During her early life, she attended and joined Bethlehem Baptist Church in Appomattox County, Virginia. Her academic education started at the Bethlehem Community School. Shortly after graduating from R.R. Moton High School, Farmville, VA in 1944, she moved to East Orange, NJ, joining her three older sisters. There she initially lived with her uncle, Calvin Clifford Scott, affectionately called “Uncle Punk”. Upon her arrival in New Jersey, she joined Union Baptist Church in Orange, NJ, where her uncle and his sister, Aunt Lizzie, and other family were members. .Laura was very active at Union Baptist, singing with the Young Peoples Choir and later joining the Senior Choir. She served with the Missionary and taught Sunday school for many years.
