Obituary For Lorraine Jennings Hicks

Mrs. Lorraine Jennings Hicks was the widow of the late Howard Herbert Hicks, Sr. and the only child gifted by God to the late Addison and Nannie Mae Watson-Jennings. She was born April 11, 1936 and was called to eternal rest October 2, 2022 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia surrounded by her immediate family with love and support until the end. Mama did not suffer and went unto God our father with a smile! Lorraine was raised in the Meherrin area of Prince Edward County, VA and attended the Verso Community School. Her father was a mill worker and her mother a homemaker and house keeper. As a young girl, she would help her mother wash and iron clothes for other people in the county and worked in the Peach Orchard to earn money. This is where she said, “She learned the value of hard work.” She was baptized and Joined Forest Baptist Church in Meherrin at a very young age and sung in the church and school choirs. In 1951, she was one of many who went on strike and marched in protest for a better education and school buildings in Prince Edward County. In 1956, she graduated from the new Robert R. Moton High School, which was built as a result of the protest. On August 26, 1956, Lorraine was united in marriage with her beloved Howard H. Hicks in Rice, VA. Three children were born to this union, Howard, Jr., Rosalind and Bemeche`. She joined the Calvary Baptist Church in Burkeville, VA to unite with her husband in fellowship and “served enormously in support of the Church Choir, Missionary Circle, Kitchen Committee and other Auxiliaries. Mom loved her “Lord and Savior and His Church!” She continued to work hard as a homemaker to provide for her family on the farm and later as a caregiver and then as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blackstone, VA from which she retired after many years of service. On August 7, 2016 she joined the Mount Zion Second Baptist Church of Green Bay, VA soon after her son, Bemeché became the Minister of Music. She was named “Mother of the Church” and would sing in the choir every Sunday until her health no longer allowed her to serve and attend the services. Her eldest son, Howard H. Hicks, Jr. preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish loving memories: one daughter, Rosalind M. Love of Richmond, VA; one son, Bemeche T. Hicks of Rice, VA; four beloved grandchildren, Shamika, LaNisha, LaKisha Anderson of Richmond, VA and Gary Love of Charlotte, North Carolina; fifteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
