Louise Gray-Perkins was born on September 7, 1927, in New Canton, Virginia to Sidney Gray and Walter Scruggs. She was the oldest of three children, who preceded her in death. Louise transitioned to be with the Lord on Friday, December 30, 2022, at Farmville Health and Rehabilitation Center. Louise received her education in the public school system of Buckingham County, Virginia. At the age of eighteen, she moved to Brooklyn, New York with her Godmother Ethel. She began working at an early age. In 1950, her mother and two sisters were reunited with her in Brooklyn, New York. In 1955 Louise met and married Thomas Perkins. This union was blessed with six children, Calvin, Robert, Leroy, Mona, Rodney and Kimley. In 1962, Reverend Jacob N. Underwood, Sr., while evangelizing in the East New York section of Brooklyn, NY, met Louise’s mother, Sidney Gray and organized the Grace Mission, which later became Grace Baptist Church. Reverend Underwood inspired Louise and her family to come and worship with the newly formed group of believers. Under the tutelage of Pastor Underwood, Louise was the first President of the Usher Board and was appointed as Supervisor of the joint Usher Board. She was a Deaconess, a member of the Pastor’s Aide and Missionary Ministries. She served with great love, passion, and dedication. Louise was employed for several years at East New York Family Day Care with the late Thomasena Underwood. She then worked for the Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families. She returned to work with East New York Family Day Care Center, where she continued her employment until she retired in 1996. In 1996, Louise Perkins and her husband, Thomas, relocated to Farmville, Virginia where they joined Sharon Baptist Church. Louise continued to serve as a Deaconess at Sharon Baptist under the leadership of the late Reverend James Franklin and Reverend Robert Jones, his successor. In addition to her parents, Louise was preceded in death by: her loving husband, Deacon Thomas Perkins; son, Calvin Bartlett; a grandson, Shawn Mills and two sisters, Mary Freeman and Bernice Gray. She was a faithful, loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Rodney and Mona of Farmville, VA., Robert, Kimley and son-in-law Lindon McKenzie of Brooklyn, NY, Leroy of Harlem, NY; her sister-in law, Ruby Tunney of Farmville, VA; ten grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, her Sharon Baptist Church and Grace Baptist Church of Christ families, and a multitude of friends.
