Obituary For Mary Magdalene Holman Green
On Monday, February 2, 2026, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, aunt, and friend was called home to glory from her residence in Brentwood, Maryland.
Early Life and Education Mary was born in Arvonia, Virginia, to the late Samuel and Mildred Holman. As the youngest child of a very large family, she was the "baby" of the Holman clan. Mary attended the Holman School during her elementary years before continuing her education at Buckingham Training School, where she proudly earned her diploma. Gifted with an eye for aesthetics, she also attended Cosmetology school.
She was exceptionally talented at styling hair and believed in the importance of presentation; Mary never left the house looking anything less than her best-even if she was just heading to the store for a bag of sugar.
Faith and Service Mary's spiritual journey began at Spreading Oak Baptist Church, where she was baptized and remained a devoted member for many years.
After moving to the city, she joined Isle of Patmos Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., where she lent her voice to the choir and served in various other capacities. Though she relocated, she never forgot "The Home Place." She faithfully attended homecoming services every year until her health began to fail, and even then, her heart and mind remained with her home church.
Family and Home In 1958, Mary united in holy matrimony with Jeffery (Pete) Green.
After a brief stay in Baltimore, they moved to Washington, D.C., and eventually settled in Brentwood, Maryland, in 1973. Together, they raised three children: Mildred Marlene, Denise, and Jeffery. Mary and Jeffery shared 32 years of marriage until his passing. A pillar of her neighborhood, Mary remained in her cherished family home for 53 years.
Career and Interests Mary was a diligent worker who held several positions throughout her life. She is most remembered for her long tenure at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where she retired as a Dietitian. Following her retirement, she returned to the workforce for a brief time at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
A true daughter of farmers, Mary had a natural green thumb. She loved gardening and
"digging in the dirt," producing the sweetest tomatoes, okra, and cucumbers. Cooking from scratch was another passion of hers. She was creative in making down home soul food for the family. When she wasn't in her garden or cooking, she enjoyed solving puzzles and watching game shows, with The Price is Right being a perennial favorite.
She was also a dedicated fan of Walker, Texas Ranger; she could have watched it 24 hours a day and loved every minute of it. She enjoyed traveling to the beach while avoiding the sand and taking cruises with the tamily. When going out to eat with the family, Red Lobster was always her first option.
Legacy Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Jeffery (Pete) Green; her brothers, Sam, Lawrence, Glover, Richard, Oscar, and Russell; and her sisters, Ernestine, Mabel, and Ressie.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted children: Mildred Marlene Walker (McKinley), Denise Hughes (Mark), and Jeffery Green (Denise).
She is also survived by her six grandchildren: Antoinette (Jevon Sr.), Lisa, Marcus (Ayana), Dominique, Jason, and Jenay; her great-grandchildren: Antoin, Aaron (Tiara), Ashley (Leutrell), and Jevon Jr.; and five great-great-grandchildren:
Azhauni, Azhyon, Asa, Taron, and Uri.
Her memory will also be honored by two devoted nephews, James Milton Holman (Eva) and Arthur Alphonso Jones, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
