Pearl Dyer Zwahlen, age 90, peacefully passed away of natural causes on June 9, 2023 at The Woodland in Farmville, Virginia. Pearl was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, beloved school teacher, a good friend to many, and a woman of great faith. She will be greatly missed by all of her family
and friends.

Pearl was born in Alma, Nebraska on October 3, 1932, to George and Mabel (Seyler) Dyer. She had three siblings, Don, Harold (both deceased), and Clara (Hogendorn). Pearl graduated from high school at the age of 16 as valedictorian earning a scholarship to Kearney State Teachers College where she received a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish. She taught for 34 years starting in North Platte and Bridgeport, Nebraska; Hobbs, New Mexico; Tia Juana, Venezuela; and finally, Shreveport, Louisiana.

Pearl met her husband, Lee C. Zwahlen, while in Venezuela. Lee, from ElDorado, Arkansas, was a Petroleum Engineer who graduated from Oklahoma University. Pearl was teaching Spanish to the children of the oil field workers at the American camp they lived in near Lake Maracaibo. They were married on December 25, 1959, in Kearney, Nebraska, and had their two sons while stationed in Venezuela. They returned to the U.S. in 1963, and moved to Shreveport, Louisiana to raise their family and later had their daughter. Pearl joined Mangum Memorial United Methodist Church in 1963 and was an active member of the Jubilee Sunday School Class for 55 years. She served on numerous committees and held
leadership roles at Mangum until she left Shreveport in 2018 to move to The Woodland in Farmville, Virginia to be near her daughter.

When Pearl retired from teaching in 1998, she became even more of an avid reader, sometimes reading 5 to 7 books per week, and sharing her extensive book collection with family and friends. She also traveled throughout North America and Europe with her best friend and niece, Christine Zwahlen, plus many of her fellow Mangum Church friends. In addition to her children and their spouses, Clifford and Jill Zwahlen, Daniel and Alice Zwahlen, and Pamela and Roe Freeman, Pearl adored her two granddaughters, three grandsons, and four great
granddaughters. She also had numerous nieces and nephews. She loved to visit her family and for them to come visit her and took great joy in cooking for all of
them.

We wish to thank all of the staff and administration at The Woodland that gave our Mom love, care, and support over the past five years. And we cannot say
enough how much we love and thank, Pamela and Roe Freeman, for all of their time they gave so freely to Mom and all of the special memories they created
with her.

A private Celebration of Life will be held for Pearl in the near future with just family members. Donation may be made to the charity of your choice in Pearl’s
name and the name of your favorite teacher.
