Obituary For Rachel Juanita Johnson Hicks

Rachel Juanita Hicks entered her eternal rest on Tuesday, August 25, 2026
at her residence in Burkeville, Virginia, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on February 16, 1940, in Amelia, VA, to Walter R. and
Sallie Wells Johnson. She accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age.
Later, she became a member of the High Rock Baptist Church in Rice, VA,
where she was a faithful member until her health declined, and she served
on the food committee.
Rachel attended and graduated from Luther H. Foster High School
in Nottoway, VA. After high school, she was employed at Uniroyal, as an
inspector, where she made footwear for the armed services, among many
other well known items. In addition to that, she was an excellent seamstress
and a wonderful caretaker of children that included all of her grandchildren,
great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other children in the community.
Parents always knew that their children were loved and well cared for.
On May 24, 1958, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Deacon
Lee Edward Hicks, Jr. Seven children were born to this union. She was a
loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister. To know
her was to love her. She was an extremely hard worker and took great pride
in all that she undertook. She loved family, cooking, caring for children,
sewing, gardening and having yard sales. She had a great heart and genuinely
loved all. She also loved to worship her Lord and Savior and supported
various church programs.
In addition to her parents, Rachel was preceded in death by: her husband,
Deacon Lee Hicks; two sisters, Mary Douglas of Baltimore, Maryland and
Sally Hicks of Chesterfield, VA. She leaves to cherish her memory: four
daughters, Theresa Hicks-Hill (Calvin) of Green Bay, VA, Angela Harvin,
Penny Parran (Franklin) of Burkeville, VA, Rachel Alexander (Chris) of Glen
Allen, VA; three sons, Michael Hicks, Sr. (Gwen), Andre Hicks (Sondra) of
Burkeville, VA and Lee E. Hicks, III (Angela) of Chesterfield, VA; sixteen
grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Rebecca Gaffney of
Burkeville, VA, Brenda Johnson of Baltimore, MD; two brothers, Walter
Johnson, Jr. (Gaynelle) of Jacksonville, Florida, Gale Johnson (Shirley) of
Meherrin, VA; three sisters-in-law, Ruby Mildred Bowen, Martha Mahan,
and Barbara J. Spring ( Joe); two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Hicks (Georgia)
and Robert L. Hicks (Cheryl) all of Rice, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins and friends.
