On February 12, 1949, in Clarksville, Virginia, a beautiful princess was born to the late Mr. Thomas Rogers and Mrs. Annie Rogers. Rebecca T. Dove was a woman of unwavering faith, boundless compassion, and extraordinary dedication to education. Her life was a testament to service, love, and the lasting impact one person can have on generations.
As a young girl, Rebecca attended the Cumberland County School District and graduated from Luther P. Jackson High School. She continued her education at Kittrell College and Delaware State College, where she earned her teaching credentials in 1974.
Following her college graduation, Ms. Dove began her teaching career in the Prince Edward County School System, where she served for two years. She later joined Cumberland County Elementary School, where she faithfully taught for an additional 39 years. After an exceptional 41-year career in education, she retired in 2015.
At Cumberland County Elementary School, Ms. Dove was admired not only as a respected educator and leader but also for organizing the beloved annual "Soul Food Feast." She embodied a nurturing spirit, dedicating herself to educating young children while helping each one build a strong foundation for a successful future. Her passion for education extended far beyond the classroom through tutoring, mentoring, and caregiving, all of which she offered with a generous and selfless heart.
Rebecca loved the Lord with all her heart and faithfully served Him as a devoted member of Bright and Morning Star Church. She was instrumental in organizing the church's annual Black History programs and willingly gave of her time and talents in service to God and her community.
Ms. Dove will forever be remembered as a pillar of her community. Her caring, loving, and nurturing spirit drew countless people to her throughout her life. Through her decades of teaching, she touched several generations of students. No matter where she went, she was certain to encounter former students, sharing warm memories and joyful conversations about their school days.
Family meant everything to Rebecca. She cherished every opportunity to spend time with loved ones and treasured meaningful conversations with family and friends. She especially enjoyed preparing her famous potato salad and feeding others, expressing her love through hospitality and generosity.
Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Annie Rogers; and her brothers, Charles Townes Jr. and Raymond Townes.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory her beloved son, Nekoda Townes (Regina); her cherished grandchildren, Timara Miller, Raiya Townes, and Nekoda Townes Jr.; her treasured great-granddaughter, Skylar Miller; her loving siblings, Sandy Townes, Willie Townes, Linda Townes, Susan Rogers, and Annie Hansil; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members of the Townes, Rogers, Sims, and Dove families, and many devoted friends whose lives were forever enriched by her love.
Rebecca lived by a simple yet powerful motto: "Make sure you always pray!" Those words reflected the faith that guided her life and the hope she instilled in everyone she encountered.
The life and legacy of this true queen, educator, servant, and woman of God will continue to live on in the hearts of all whose lives she touched. Though she has departed from this earthly life, her love, wisdom, kindness, and unwavering faith will remain an enduring blessing for generations to come.
