Obituary For Robert Daniel Perkins

Our dearly beloved Robert (Bobby) Daniel Perkins met his lord and savior at the heavenly gates on April 20, 2024, after a brief stay at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.

Bobby was born on July 18th, 1945, to the late Horace and Mary Sue Perkins. He was a devoted and loving son. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, as he accepted the Lord and Jesus Christ at an early age at Fork Union Baptist Church in Buckingham, Virginia. He served as a trustee and member of the men’s choir, demonstrating his commitment to his faith and community. Bobby was also a Masonic Lodge #188 member, further illustrating his service and dedication.

Bobby was a hard worker and prideful from a very early age. He attended schools in

Buckingham County and worked as a student bus driver. He obtained his high school diploma in 2004 with honors from James Madison High School: Professional Career Development. Bobby was an exemplary worker for 53 years at Whitehurst/Slurry Paving Companies, where he served in many capacities, including becoming the first African American foreman. He retired (twice) from Whitehurst but continued to work in the community, cutting grass for churches, neighbors or anyone who needed his assistance.

Bobby was a virtuous man who dedicated his life to helping his family, friends, and strangers. He was fun, comical, caring, playful, serious, and genuine, rolled up into one beautiful heart. His hobbies included hunting, NASCAR, boxing, fishing, basketball, and card games. And he was a fearless Dallas Cowboys fan! Bobby was also an entrepreneur, owning several small businesses, including the owner of Bobby’s Place, the community barbershop.

Bobby was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Nellie M. Walker (Rev. James L.); brothers, James Perkins, Leslie Cleo Perkins (Reversa); and stepson, Malik DaSilva.

He leaves many to carry on his legacy: his devoted wife, Joan Perkins, lovingly together for 29 years; his four children with Gloria W. Perkins, Angela G. Roberts (Marc), Darin M. Perkins (Sylvia), Alethea I. Perkins-Caine, and Robert K. Perkins; two stepsons with Joan, Sultan Hamzah (Juanita) and Jon Germany Bey; fifteen grandchildren, Nikkia, Malika, Benjamin III (Heather), Tavin, Ebony, Raequan, Daniel Jr., Nehemiah, Khalaya, Isaiah, Denzel, Jaequan, Tamir, Makiyah, and Dyson; one great-grandson, Tavin Jr; seven siblings, Gracie Thomas (Elmer), John Perkins (Linda), Mary Sue Moore, George Perkins (Loretta), Bascom Perkins (Helen), Yvonne Spencer, and Lucinda Saulisbury (Grayling); three sisters-in-law, Laura Perkins, Charlotte Forbes, and Gussie Tate; life-long friend, Caesar Lewis; and a host of nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly, friends, and the community at large, who will miss his presence and his contributions.
