Obituary For Ruth Booker Merritt

On Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at 4:55 p.m., Ruth Booker Merritt was called to her heavenly home. Born January 23, 1932, Ruth was the eleventh child born of fourteen children born to the late William and Ruth Michaux Booker in Cumberland, Virginia. She received her education at Cotton Town Elementary School, in Cumberland. She confessed and accepted Jesus Christ, was baptized, and joined the Rocky Mount Baptist Church in Cumberland. She was a faithful and dependable member and worker in all activities of the church. Ruth moved to New York at the age of eighteen. She spent the majority of her adult life in New York. She worked in culinary and hospitality services. She married James Merritt in 1964, and no children were born to this union. While in New York, she was called by God and ordained at Lord Mission Bible Church and became a Pentecostal Evangelist.. She was a faithful member of the church and served in many capacities, including the missionary circle and church choir. In 1980, she returned to Virginia and started her catering business, and worked as a domestic worker. When she returned to Virginia, she resided in her original family home in Cumberland, before moving to Farmville, and then to Rice, Virginia, where she resided until her death. Ruth has been an inspiration to many of her family members and friends. She was always sharing a kind word of encouragement. She was preceded in death by: her parents, William and Ruth Booker: her husband James Merritt; her brothers, Erving, Tom, Steve, Bernard, Arthur, and John Booker; and sisters, Mammie, Mary, Charlotte, and Judy. Ruth leaves to cherish her memories:, one sister, Lydia Booker Kimber of Richmond, Virginia; two sisters-in-law of New York, Markita Booker and Carrie Booker; a step daughter, Pamala Vereen of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and her loving and devoted caretakers, Barbara and Cornelius Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
