Thomas David Perkins was born on September 24, 1920 in Jenkins Jones, West Virginia. He was the first of eight children born to Abraham and Sadie Johnson Perkins. He attended and graduated from Gary High School in West Virginia. He and his family were loyal members of Morning Star Baptist Church.
