Obituary For Travis Andrew Johnson

Travis Andrew Johnson, affectionately known as TJ, age 35, of Rice, VA, unexpectedly transitioned to his heavenly home on June 2, 2023. Travis is preceded in death by his mother Margaret Bernice Couch, paternal grandfather Bishop Mitchell Tucker, and maternal grandparents, Sallie and Edward Roberts. Travis was born on May 30, 1988, to Margaret Bernice Couch and Travis Lorenza Johnson. He was a remarkable human being, whose shining spirit and infectious charm left an indelible mark on all those whose lives he touched.
Tragically, when Travis was just seven years old, his mother passed away. He was raised by his paternal grandparents, Stella and the late Bishop Mitchell Tucker, and maternal grandparents the late Sallie and Edward Roberts. Under their loving guidance, he flourished into the wonderful man whose memory we honor and celebrate today.
Travis’ love for basketball became evident from an early age and he spent countless hours perfecting his skills throughout his former years. He graduated from Prince Edward County High School in 2006. He attended Virginia Union University where he prevailed in his studies until he was diagnosed with a mental health disorder at age 20. Yet, no matter what circumstances he faced or the struggles he endured, Travis always strived to be his best self. He read up on African American history, like the works of W.E.B Dubois, Malcolm X, and Michelle Alexander, and continued to elevate his mind. He also had a natural talent for mathematics and helped others to achieve their academic goals.
Travis often stated that his greatest accomplishment came in 2010, with the birth of his son, Trevon Johnson, whom he loved with all his heart. He enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family and being a devoted father. Travis was an incredibly loving son, grandson, sibling, and friend to so many people.
Although Travis faced many obstacles throughout his life, his unwavering faith in God helped him remain optimistic. His infectious positivity and laughter uplifted the spirits of all those around him. His determination to beat all odds inspired others to accept the challenge. We hope that his light will continue to shine through those who knew him.
Travis leaves to cherish his memories and continue his legacy: his loving son Trevon Johnson and dear friend Phylicia Lewis; his father Travis Lorenza Johnson; stepmother Diane Dabney; his grandmother Rev. Stella Tucker; his sisters Marquisha Wright (Joshua), Ra’Shanna Couch, and Travina Johnson; mentoring aunt Angela Tucker- Brown (Norvell); devoted cousins Jaiona Owen, Jasmine Mayton, Dominique Mayton, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
